Office Sound Systems

Offices and commercial settings of all types and sizes often employ sound systems to improve communication and to enable effective mass notification (office Tannoy, Paging, PA & Lockdown). Audio over IP (AoIP) integrates with network infrastructures adding capability and improved function to audio applications, control and management when compared to traditional analogue audio.

Typical office IP sound system audio applications:

  • Paging, ‘Tannoy’ & Public Address (PA) – staff announcements
  • Background Music (BGM) – reception areas & similar areas
  • Scheduled audio Message Playout – eg. fire alarm testing
  • Triggered audio Message Playout – security, incident & lockdown

Office Audio Applications

Examples of typical office sound systems applications, widely employed within offices and commercial settings.

Mass Notification (Tannoy, Paging, PA)

Staff and customer mass notification through audio  communication using ‘Tannoy’, Paging and Public Address (PA) applications are regularly employed in office and commercial settings.

User interface options include microphone/s, telephones, app, browser and MS Teams Paging.

  • Staff call / announcements
  • General instruction and information announcements
  • Event and Incident announcements / management

Background Music (BGM)

Background Music (BGM) is not typically used in offices, but is found in related service and hospitality areas such as office reception areas, canteens, restaurants, cafes.

  • Stored Audio Playback (music player)
  • Music Streaming Service (eg. Soundtack Your Brand)
  • ‘Curated’ local/streaming music service (popular option / choice)
  • Zoned Audio – The ability to select and playout different BGM to different areas

Audio Message Playout

Pre-recorded audio tones and messages are used within many offices and commercial settings. On demand, triggered or scheduled playout of stored audio messages are used.

  • Regular, scheduled instruction and information audio messages
  • Fire Alarm / Systems Testing
  • Security & Incident
  • Lockdown & Access Control

IP Intercom & IP Access Control

Most office and commercial sites use access control measures at their gates, doors and building entry points. IP Intercom elevates function and capability, offering full multi-media interaction and a wide range of access control technology options.

  • Multi-media interaction
  • PIN, RFID, NFC, Fingerprint & Facial Recognition
  • SIP Telephony and ONVIF video integration
  • Integrate with Time & Attendance systems

Office Sound Systems & AoIP Technology

Offices often enjoy decent network infrastructure capability with widespread WiFi availability. Audio over IP (AoIP) can leverage this investment, working alongside other communication applications within office and wider commercial settings.

Scheduling, flexible zoning, time of day audio routing and volume control are conveniently managed through firmware, software and browser GUI.

App, browser, telephones and MS Teams integration are examples of user interface options that provide added flexibility for user access to office audio applications and systems.

AoIP vs Traditional Audio - Which Technology?

Many existing office sound systems run very well using traditional audio technologies. Typically, these systems are installed and based through rack mount system equipment (mixers, amplifiers & processors) and are designed with high impedance, 100v line distribution to speaker points. Traditional audio design remains a viable installation option for offices looking for only basic functional capability and limited integrated options.

New offices & commercial projects requiring enhanced audio function, integration or capability will need to look towards AoIP technology options. For example, flexible audio routing and volume control and interface options with SIP/telephony and even MS Teams could be important for office settings. Balancing cost and capability, it is also possible to consider an integrated AoIP / Traditional audio system solution mixing both technologies for less complex / demanding project designs.

Office AoIP vs Traditional Audio...

  • No new cabling, leverage existing network infrastructure
  • Improved capability, scalability, management & control
  • Topology & audio routing options not available with traditional audio
  • Requires little or no centralised system equipment

Traditional Audio vs AoIP...

  • Lower cost. System, device and speaker costs
  • Wide manufacturer and product choice availability
  • Established sales and support channels
  • Good interoperability (speakers & audio equipment)

Mixed Technology Audio

Mixed technology audio designs can offer office audio systems a balance of function, capability and cost.

This example shows a multi-zone office audio design using mixed audio technology. We see a number of user / system input entities, with playout to IP speakers and zone communities of traditional speakers via IP audio decoders.
