Project Outline

The Oundle medical surgery is a large community medical centre offering the full range of standard GP services. As part of process improvement plans to streamline patient calling for appointments (GP, Nurse and Triage). Our solution was to install speakers to the waiting room/areas – announcement capability was provided by integrating the site IP telephone system to enable staff announcements from telephones within any of the associated treatment/consultation rooms.

Audio Applications

Next Patient Call

Integrated IP Telephony

Audio Specification & Technologies

100v line, high impedance

SIP / IP Telephony Interface

Later interface to patient arrival system

Installation Details

The main audio system comprised an integrated Class D mixer/amplifier, housed within a dedicated 19″ rack for safe protected access. Two audio zones (for each patient waiting area) were installed with recessed ceiling speakers to existing ceiling plasterboard.

We installed a SIP / IP telephony interface unit. Registered to the site SIP telephone system, the interface unit was also connected the the audio system (acting like a gateway). Telephones from any of the treatment or consultation rooms were able to access the audio system to announce ‘next patient’ call.

Note: Our initial audio configuration was altered at a later date to allow for browser triggered audio tone (MP3) – this was combined with a digital monitor which provided output of additional patient information and direction to associated treatment or consultation room.

Project Outline

The Lister Hospital in Stevenage was scheduled for major refurbishment to many of the various healthcare departments. Our focus for this project was for service to the hospital Accident and Emergency (A&E) and associated adult and children’s support facilities (minors, majors, resus, paediatric and fractures). Working through the appointed project M&E contractor, our system design provided coverage throughout the hospital ED supporting notification, communication and staff co-ordination.

Audio Applications

Public Address (PA) / Tannoy

Mass Notification

ED Staff communication and co-ordination

Background Music (public waiting)

Audio Specification & Technologies

100v line, high impedance

Multiple zones (focused audio playout)

Specialist, rugged microphone base stations

Priority audio

Installation Details

The main hospital Emergency Department (ED) is located on the ground floor. The basement below was used to install the associated audio system equipment and largely in support of cable routing and containment. Regular ‘riser’ access was available for us to install and route cables to the various ED departments as required (for both speakers and microphones).

Our design was based on 100v line audio – 6 audio zones were created to provide targeted audio and to limit unnecessary playout between zones/departments. The system was primarily installed to allow staff to communicate and co-ordinate ED staff and functions. For example, in the main / majors ED department, audio announcements were used in advance of serious inbound patients requiring specialist focused support.

Each audio zone was installed with at least one microphone to enable local zone playout of announcements as well as being able to make ED wide (all zones) playout if required. Prioritisation and ‘busy’ indicators were designed and installed for use to ensure certain departments audio had priority over others should an attempt be made to use at the same time.

Project Outline

Wiltshire Air Ambulance is an emergency medical charity that provides pre-hospital emergency care, in the air or on land, including treatments normally only available in hospital.

A new airbase site location on the outskirts of Melksham – a newbuild construction required an integrated audio system to help communicate and control the activation response and to alert the doctors / pilots across the support building and helicopter hangars.

Abletek had previous experience with similar air ambulance and emergency response services, we discussed this and any site specific requirements. Our detained design solution was created and provided to the project engineering consultants. Following approval, the audio systems were installed by the project electrical contractors, with Abletek site support for testing and commissioning.

Audio Applications

Public Address (PA) / Tannoy

Audio activation system (message playout)

Audio Specification & Technologies

100v line, high impedance

Bespoke signal relay interface used during alert activation

Traditional audio message player (MP3)

Installation Details

Our design solution was based on traditional 100v line. Cables to speakers were installed through existing cable ducting between the main support building and helicopter hangars. A single audio broadcast zone was created (all audio to all areas/speakers).

The system was used for general use Public Address (PA) / Tannoy announcements – operated from a standard paging microphone based in the service control room.

A series of wall buttons were installed to the office block and helicopter hangars – these were to be used by staff to instigate a response ‘call out’ alarm. Medical staff, doctors and pilots used this alarm to respond and ready for service and flight as required.

Project Outline

The Chase Farm Hospital nr. Enfield was under major refurbishment to many of the various healthcare departments and buildings. Our focus for this project was for pre-refurb and post-refurb service to the main hospital Accident and Emergency (A&E) including minors, majors, resus, paediatric and fractures. Working through the appointed project M&E contractor, our system design provided coverage throughout the hospital ED supporting notification, communication and staff co-ordination.

Audio Applications

100v line, high impedance

Multiple zones (focused audio playout)

Specialist, rugged microphone base stations

Priority audio

Installation Details

The main hospital Emergency Department (ED) was temporarily relocated into some existing older medical buildings. The initial installation phase was focused on the installation of audio services into two primary ‘wards’ spanning either side of a main set of building facilities. The second phase followed the main site building works – the hospital ED was again moved into it’s permanent home within the newly constructed hospital building.

Our design was based on 100v line audio – two primary audio zones were created to provide targeted audio and to limit unnecessary playout between the two ED wards. The system was primarily installed to allow staff to communicate and co-ordinate ED staff and functions. For example, in the main / majors ED department, audio announcements were used in advance of serious inbound patients requiring specialist focused support.

Each audio zone was installed with separate microphones to enable local zone playout of announcements as well as being able to make ED wide (both wards / zones) playout if required. ‘Busy’ indicators were designed and installed integrated to the microphones for use to ensure both zones/wards could see in use activity before making ED wide announcements.
